Easel: from the Maastricht painter Franciscus Josephus (Jef) Schipper(1910-1967)
Period: the easel was used as from the second half of the twenties; the photo is taken in Maastricht around 1934. He lived in Maastricht until 1928, then until 1933 in Antwerp when he returned to Maastricht. He had a workshop above the Hellgate(situated above the Gate) where he worked and received subsidy from the Maastricht municipality.
He painted, aquarelle and made drawings of portraits(pastel), landscapes, still lives and was known for his sense of colors. He travelled to the Cote d’Azur, Antibes, Nice and Cannes. Jef was a member of the professional association of visual artists (BBK) of Amsterdam. He worked for some time together with fellow artist Henri Schoonbrood(1898-1972). He favored making pre-studies in Brussels and is favorite scenes where landscapes in the Belgian and Luxembourg Ardennes. He had permanent expositions in Maastricht, Amsterdam and Utrecht.
